Rahul, Priyanka Gandhi arrested for protesting against Indian Election Commission
NEW DELHI: On Monday, the Delhi Police apprehended senior opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi from Congress, and
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Sanjay Raut, leader of Shiv Sena (UBT).
They were detained for initiating a protest against the Election Commission’s alleged ‘collusion’ with the ruling BJP, as reported by NDTV. Joint
Police Commissioner Deepak Purohit verified the detention but refused to provide further details.
Mr. Purohit stated that the opposition lacked police authorization for a protest of this magnitude, and that only a contingent of 30 MPs had been
permitted to proceed to the Election Commission and file a grievance.
“The Election Commission stated that 30 MPs might visit them… yet more than 200 showed up.” We halted them to avert any collapse of order.
and sequence. They were subsequently apprehended. A few MPs attempted to leap over barricades. “They were also apprehended,” stated Deputy Commissioner of Police Devesh Kumar Mahla. Rahul and Priyanka are the grandchildren of ex-prime minister Indira Gandhi.
